QuickBooks Commerce currently saves images at the variant level, where each variant has an associated image(s) that are privately assigned and are not available for use with other variants.
After choosing to manage images at the product level, images are saved to the product rather than each variant. They can then can be attached to multiple variants within that same product.
Due to the previous requirement of uploading images directly to each variant, if you needed to upload the same image to multiple variants, managing images at the product level will mean that each image will be moved to the product level. This will result in duplicate images when viewing a product's images.
If you choose to delete the duplicates, you'll need to reassign your variants' remaining images. This article has further details on that process.

Adding images
To add images to a product, navigate to Inventory > Products > Product Name, then select the Images tab.
From here, you can see any images already saved to the product, add more images, or delete existing images.
There are two methods of adding a new image:
Firstly, you can select either a single or multiple files on your computer, then drag and drop them into the area labeled Drop files here to upload.
Secondly, you can click the Upload Images button towards the screen's upper right corner to open your computer's file selection options. Again, single or multiple images can be selected for upload.
Further details on assigning each image to the product's variants can be found in this article.
Deleting Images
To delete an image from the product, click to select the image (multiple selections can be made), then click the Remove Selected Images button on the upper-right corner.
A warning will now be displayed advising that you may also remove that image from multiple variants if it has already been attached to them by deleting an image from a product.
If you are happy to proceed, click the red Yes, Delete Images option to delete the images.
Alternatively, if you'd prefer to detach an image from a variant without deleting it, further details can be found in this article.
